Some good news about asbestos

Fortunately, undisturbed asbestos it is relatively harmless. This is a relief, considering its notorious reputation. So don't panic about it's possible presence but do treat it's removal with extreme caution once found.

Hard to believe but asbestos was actually used as far back as the Greek and Roman empires. The ancients were well-aware of its exceptional fire-resistant qualities. They also noticed that miners had trouble breathing when they dug out the fibrous material from rocks like Muscovite.

Despite this it continued to be widely used in the UK construction industry until the late 1970s. Many old garages still feature the familiar, light grey corrugated sheets that were once a staple in the roofing trade.

If you find it - STOP WORK and call an expert

The primary threat from asbestos stems from inhaling the dust and microscopic fibrous strands that are released when it's disturbed. This underscores the importance of exercising extreme caution when handling the material.

If you suspect asbestos on your property, remain calm but take immediate action. Halt any building or renovation project straight away and capture photographic evidence. Leave the area undisturbed until you've consulted an expert on it's safe removal and disposal.
