This is the order of works for demolishing a house:

Cap all services such as main water and sewer connection, electricity, gas and telephone.
Put upsite fencing; erect scaffold if required.
Hazardous material (asbestos) removed under licence licensed company.
Strip inside, kitchen, and remove all cabling, lighting, plumbing, radiators etc.
Remove all woodwork, windows frames, internal/external timber mouldings etc.
Strip roof of tiles and flashings.
Remove structural timbers, joists and trusses.
Break down walls. Unwanted materials can be removed for crushing.
Break up remainder and grub up foundations and redundant drains.

Planning is not normally required for demolition work as it is classed as Permitted Development. PD rights can, however, be removed or restricted, in whole or in part, by the local authority using an Article 4 Direction (often used on listed buildings or in Conservation Areas)
