how big is a skip?

2 CUBIC YARDS - 'Mini Skip

The 2 yard mini skip is suitable for very small domestic jobs. It holds the equivalent of 20-30 bin bags. This size skip is fairly unusual, so you may find that many of the listed suppliers won't have one available very often. Check out prices for the other size skips to see if a larger one might make more sense.

A 2 yard skip with silhouette

4 CUBIC YARDS - 'Small Skip'

The 4 yard small skip is excellent for bathroom and smaller kitchen refits. It holds the equivalent of 30-40 bin bags. There are smaller sizes available, like the 2 yard skip, but this is a good size for any minor scale job you might have.

A 4 yard skip with silhouette - skip is at waist level

6 CUBIC YARDS - 'Builder's Skip'

One of the most popular skip sizes, the 6 yard Builders skip is perfect for larger kitchen refits and other medium sized refurbishment projects. It holds the equivalent of 50-60 bin bags.

A six yard skip with silhouette - skip is at high waist level

8 CUBIC YARDS - 'Large Skip'

The most popular skip size, the 8 yard Large skip is the largest skip available for loads of heavy waste like builders rubble, soil and concrete. It is ideal for larger residential refurbishment works and office and shop refits. It holds the equivalent of 60-80 bin bags.

An 8 yeard skip with silhouette - skip is at chest level

12 CUBIC YARDS - 'Maxi Skip'

The 12 yard Large skip is ideal for large house clearances or bulky refurbishment works. It holds the equivalent to 100-120 bin bags. It cannot be used for loads of heavy waste (like builders rubble, soil and concrete) due to weight constraints of skip lorries. Equally, its size means that most councils will not allow it to be put on a public highway, so you can normally only use one if you have space for it on your property.

a 12 yard skip with silhouette - skip is at shoulder level

14 CUBIC YARDS - 'Ultra Skip'

The 14 yard 'Ultra Skip' is the largest commonly used skip. It's too big to go on road - councils won't allow a permit for a skip this size, so you'll have to make sure you've got somewhere to store it off road. Just like the 12 yard, it cannot be used for loads of heavy waste because the lorry won't be able to pick the skip up. It's a very big skip - and will fit between 150 and 180 bin bags. It's a good size skip for large scale clearances - emptying three or four garages of general waste, or clearing out several lofts completely.

Skip Permits Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells

Overview

Contact your local council for a skip licence if you want to put a skip on a public road.

In most areas, skip hire companies are responsible for getting skip licences, also sometimes called skip permits. In some areas you’ll need to do it yourself.

You need a licence for:

  • skips
  • hippobags and other skip bags

Restrictions

You can’t put a skip on the pavement. You don’t need a skip licence if you’re putting the skip entirely on private land.

You may need to put safety lights and markings on or around the skip. This could include:

  • reflective markings
  • traffic cones
  • night-time safety lamps
  • the name and telephone number of the skip hire company

Contact your local council to find exact rules for lights and markings in your area.

Fines and penalties

If you don’t put up the required safety lights and markings, you could be fined up to £1,000.

Before you hire a skip

The 8 big things you need to know before you book a skip!

"How do I find a good skip hire company?"

It’s not easy to find a skip company you can trust– unless you know someone in the trade personally or have a recent recommendation.  The phone book and internet for instance, is full of identical-looking skip companies with identical looking ads

The bad ones are just cowboys that often fly-tip your waste and therefore add to your council tax bill - 'cos the councils are the ones who have to clean it up!

Did you know? "Every 90 seconds, somebody, somewhere is fly-tipping in the UK"
This figure is so high because so many people opt for the cheapest skip hire or "man with van" they can find. Because these companies cannot afford to dispose of the waste properly, it ends up costing all of us more money.

"What actually happens to my rubbish when they take it away?"

Three things can happen to your rubbish and it’s important to know what they might be:

1: If you use a cowboy they’ll probably just fly-tip it in a wood or country lane and leave the council to clean up (and you, the council tax payer to foot the bill)

2: A reputable skip company will take the rubbish to a land-fill and pay tax to put it in an over-crowded landfill

3: A company with a real commitment will separate the waste into recyclable and non-recyclable materials THEN, once  they have recycled everything they possibly can they process your waste into green fuel with only the very smallest residue going to landfill.

Landfill space in the UK is running out fast. We all need to keep rubbish out of landfills for the sake of our children and country.

The bottom line is - the cheaper the skip, the less likely it is that the waste is being responsibly managed.

"Why do I need to care?"

Because in the eyes of the law you are responsible for your rubbish.  You need to know who collects it and what they’re going to do with it.  It’s called a Duty of Care.

“How do I get them to turn up on time?”

Skips are notorious for being delivered either very early or very late.

That’s for two reasons: firstly, skip collection and delivery can be tricky as many skips are over-filled so can’t be collected, or have the wrong things in them (like hazardous waste).  Problems like this can really ruin a skip-lorry driver’s day.

The second problem, though, is caused by naughty people at skip companies telling you what you want to hear so they can get your business.  They just take your money and run!

"How much can I get in my skip?"

Skip companies put fill levels on skips for a reason – and it’s because they are legally bound to not carry unsafe loads.  Unfortunately many people order smaller skips than they need in order to save a few quid.

So play safe and order a larger skip than you think you need because you will always fill it.

"Should I pay cash?"

Skip hire is one of the very few businesses left in the country where the majority of business is done in cash.

I’m afraid you don’t have to be a genius to work out why.  Lots of skip companies don’t want to pay tax.  Lots of skip companies don’t want to have to pay to dispose of waste properly.  Lots of skip companies don’t want to leave you with a leg to stand on should you be unhappy with their dodgy service.

"Can I put my skip on the street?"

Yes you can BUT you need to get a permit from the council first and that costs a few pounds.

"What size skip do I need?"

Booking the wrong size of skip can be a real pain – you incur double the cost because you have to get another skip delivered and you have to wait around again for the collection and delivery.
